EqualityWith victory from the women's suffrage, voting was now a right to both genders. In 1919, the 19th amendment had allowed such act to be legal. Men and women were now investing time and action into evolving America's society even more beyond than ever. Creating and demanding more for gender equality was high.
Such demands lead to the creation of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The ERA had been made by Alice Paul along with the National Women's party. With the ERA, its creation would allow there to be "...eliminate all legal distinctions 'on accounts of sex'." [2] This demands of wanting equality within all areas, became a disturbance to some. Yet, it was how Alice Paul, "... insisted, women no longer require special legal protection- they needed equal access to employment, education, and all other opportunities of citizens." [2] The cry for equality was now in the ears of the nation. Yet, as women organizations heard of the future plans, it caused many of them oppose it. With organizations opposing the amendment, it leads to the failure and cancellation of the amendment during this decade. It would later come, once again, as, "...Alice Paul rewrote the ERA in 1943...." [1] Yet, women did not stop their political demands. Instead, they would later follow lifestyles that will stir the social view of women during this time. |
